Through mastering the flexibility and strength of the buntal straw, Master Milliner Louise Macdonald teaches you how she has innovated a technique to create saucer styles with out using traditional blocking methods. Louise instructs you in detail to give a perfect sinamay finish that your clients will admire.

Louise Macdonald has been making hats for well over 25 years and her signature style often features fluid hand sculpted straw trims and shapes creating unique adornments for the head.

Louise trained in London, UK as a theatrical milliner making hats for productions such as Pride and Prejudice and House Of Elliot. Since returning to Melbourne Australia in 1995 she began making fashion pieces and now her millinery year is dominated by the Melbourne Cup.


Over the years, Louise has taught at various tertiary colleges, presented at international workshops / conventions and offered millinery courses from her Melbourne studio.

Once you discover how to prepare your buntal mat, continue to hand mould the saucer shape stabilising the form with the wire. The binding you will create can be a feature of your trimming and perfecting this is essential to ensure an outstanding finish.

Stiffening will add an eye catching sheen to your hat’s appearance while giving strength and securing the shape. Style your saucer in either of two designs attaching to preferred base ready to trim with the look your customers will love.
