Discover freeform sculpting with parisisal straw—no hat blocks needed! Louise Macdonald demonstrates how to shape, sew, and finish a one-of-a-kind headpiece using simple studio tools and techniques. A creative exploration in modern millinery.

TUTOR

Louise Macdonald has been making hats for well over 25 years and her signature style often features fluid hand sculpted straw trims and shapes creating unique adornments for the head. 

Louise trained in London, UK as a theatrical milliner making hats for productions such as Pride and Prejudice and House Of Elliot. Since returning to Melbourne Australia in 1995 she began making fashion pieces and now her millinery year is dominated by the Melbourne Cup.

SUPPLIES

• Your sewing kit.
• 1 unstiffened, parisisal cone (also known as a sleeve or hood).
• Long plastic or glass head pins, such as quilting pins or longer.
• A Styrofoam head
• Plastic to cover the Styrofoam head to protect from stiffener
• Solvent or alcohol based straw stiffener and brush to apply
• 70cm of cotton or rayon covered millinery wire … 19 gauge or similar.
• 70cm of 25mm wide millinery Petersham in the same colour as the parisisal (for a head fit.)
• Hat elastic
